Death Valley 2
Morning has come and the power is still not on. It is cooler outside in the 90 plus degree heat than it is in our room. Thank you for shade and a breeze. There is one building with a generator and the hotel is offering a free breakfast to everyone in that building. A/C feels so nice, but ironically the generator goes out as we are there. However, it still feels cool and the continental breakfast was not bad. We are now ready for the day even thought none of us slept well. Yes, we are dragging a bit, but ready. The first place we go is Zabriskie Point. The picture does not do it justice. It is a beautiful spot looking over the valley with more color than the picture reveals. Amber lines us up for a picture that the boys no longer resist. They are now resign to the fact that there will be lots of photos.
Next, we head to Dante’s view. Another scene from Star Wars Episode 4. Obi wan and Luke head up here to view Mos Eisley in the distance. Our hotel is where Mos Eisley is in the movie so we are staying in Mos Eisley! We climb up the trail cliff. It, again, is beautiful. This might be my favorite view in the park, and it’s amazing how much cooler it is up here.
We also today see Twenty Mule Team Canyon (Jabba’s Palace). This was just a spot, not much to see. Next is Mesquite Flats Sand Dunes (R2-D2, C3PO first moments on Tatoine), Here R2-D2 and C3PO can’t agree on which direction to go so they split and go different directions. Why is it so hard to agree? Why do we divide over so many different things? So much of the pain and hurt in our world is caused by our always dividing nature. On the other hand, the gospel calls us to oneness in Christ. Thankful the circumstances of the movie brought R2-D2 and C3PO back together. They are the two characters that unite all Star Wars movies. In a complicated, often disagreeing, and violent world, what can our unity in Christ speak about God? But even when we fail, there is grace. God will bring us all back together. Reconciliation is one of the greatest gifts found in God. It has the characteristics of love and forgiveness in it.
Our last stop of the day is Mosaic canyon. You are not supposed to hike after 10:00 am because of the heat. We figure that in a canyon, there will be shade. We are wrong and turn around quickly. It is good to be able to admit when you are wrong, but it is not always easy to do. It is an underrated gift to be able to see our own error. However, on the hike, before we turn around, we do get to see the mosaic rock formations. They are beautiful, just like church’s decorated with mosaics with scenes of the Bible. Our lives can be these continued scenes today.
Now it’s time to head back to the hotel. What will we find? Speaking of wonderful gifts like reconciliation, the power is back on.
